MIKE MANDEL MOSAIC TILE PUBLIC ART PROJECTS

Continental Center, 180 Maiden Lane - New York City NY, 1994

HEARTH

One inch wood veneer tile
10' x 16'
$40,000

in collaboration with Larry Sultan

Commissioned by the Continental Insurance Company in New York, Hearth is a mosaic pattern of one and a quarter inch wood tile that is comprised of six shades of wood veneers.

We approached this project looking to find an image that would serve as a simple presentation of an icon of American home life. Hearth depicts a domestic home environment, a fire blazing, empty chairs await a cozy respite.

We recognized the corporate atmosphere of the building, and that its primary tenant was an insurance company. Our interest was in working with the ideas of security, warmth, and domesticity as these are the mythic symbols for the sale of insurance.
