MIKE MANDEL MOSAIC TILE PUBLIC ART PROJECTS

Texas Tech University - Lubbock TX ,2004

JONES-AT&T STADIUM

MURALS

One inch porcelain and glass tile
2 murals 22' x 24'
2 murals 24' x 51'
$252,000

The project for Jones AT&TStadium was an opportunity to create a series of artworks for a football stadium, which in and of itself is interesting, because a sports facility is an unusual context for an artwork. The challenge was to create imagery that would transcend the expectations of the football fan. I wanted to stay away from any kind of "hall of fame."My interest was not to try to recognize the individual heroes of TTU football history, but rather to invoke imagery as metaphors to recognize the significance of history itself.

There are figures within the murals that refer back to the beginning of the Matador football program in 1925, pictures from the 30's, 60's, 80's, and from as recent as a couple of years ago. I was able to retrieve photographs from the Southwest Collection's archive of TTU history that I could make into public, highly accessible architectural documents of TTU history.
