Merline Matthews was a longtime community activist and fighter for public housing residents' rights. She established a "Stop the Hunger Food Drive" which gained the attention of state officials regarding the need to estabish a food stamp program and she marched in Washington, D.C. in 1964 in her support of the Voting Rights Act.

Mattews was a founding member of the Family Health Center and the Miami-Dade Model Cities Program, and over the years received numerous awards, including the Older American Citizen of the Month award in 2000. She was a resident of Scott-Carver and later Annie Coleman Gardens. The Annie Coleman Gardens Community Center was renamed in her honor in May, 1989.
