In 1993 we completed a project commissioned by the Oakland Cultural Arts Commission to produce an artwork for DeFremery Pool in downtown Oakland. We spent several months photographing at the pool and selected images of two kids who were members of the swim team. 

 

We engaged the participation of the local Recreation Department, the lifeguards, the parents and the kids who use the pool. Since these images would become a permanent part of the neighborhood we wanted to create a mural that that had social and symbolic power and that would genuinely be accepted as a valuable addition to the community.
